David Bowie Statue Unveiled in Town Where 'Ziggy Stardust' Arrived

David Bowie fans in the U.K. have successfully funded the ultimate tribute to the music icon.

A brass statue of Bowie has been unveiled in the town of Aylesbury, where Bowie first performed in his groundbreaking Ziggy Stardust persona.

The statue depicts several stages of Bowie's incredible career, including the Stardust and The Man Who Fell to Earth periods, as well as a likeness of the singer from 2002.

Speakers mounted above the unique statue will play a Bowie song every hour between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m..

The statue was funded with a crowdfunding effort by Bowie's fans thanks to over £100,000, raised over two years.

Music promoter David Stopps was reportedly behind the effort to get the statue. Stopps says Aylesbury maintained its link to Bowie from 1971, when Bowie debuted his Hunky Dory album, to the singer's death in 2016.

Stopps recalled in an interview with The Telegraph what Aylesbury was like after Bowie's death.

"We had a gathering here under the arches; two thousand people turned up days after he died," Stopps said. "We had Bowie music and videos and it was just a lovely celebration. We thought we must do something as a monument to the town and David Bowie."

Speaking of the positive reaction to the statue, Stopps told the BBC, "When you get something like this, people either love it or hate it. If people say 'I hate it' or 'I absolutely love it,' then you know it's real art. That's the definition of art."

Murals depicting some of the most memorable images from Bowie's career have popped up all over the world since his death of cancer in early 2016, but the Aylesbury statue is said to be the first Bowie statue

Stopps is also reportedly heading up an effort to renamed his town to Aylesbowie, as a tribute to Bowie.
