Feeding San Diego is launching their Sumer Food Service Program (SFSP) in an effort to relieve hunger across the county.

Recently, six additional youth meal sites were added to the existing 23 to ensure that youth and families throughout the county have access to food.

According to the organization, one in six children faced hunger in San Diego County before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

"Now the need has surged by an estimated 50 percent," they wrote in a press release. "With schools moving to virtual learning in mid-March and unprecedented levels of unemployment across the county, youth are increasingly affected by hunger."

At all 29 youth meal sites, San Diego children aged 1-18 can receive a free breakfast and lunch daily. Parents or guardians can pick up the meals if they provide the names of their children.

Meals are served on a first-come, first-served basis to be taken home to eat.

A majority of the sites run Monday through Friday and feature a drive-through option.

You can receive more information about the free summer meals and other community resources by texting "food" or "comida" to 877-877.

A list of every youth meal site's start date, frequency, and drive-through start time can also be found here.
