Weather Forces Closure of San Diego Freeway Until March 20

A massive sinkhole has opened up in the middle of the 78 freeway in Oceanside, and it's causing a lot of headaches.

It was a domino effect. The rain caused flooding which opened up a sink hole under the westbound side of State Route 78.

Now, all westbound lanes of the 78 from College Boulevard to El Camino real are closed until Monday.

Cal Trans says they are working with local agencies to shore up the gaping hole and make repairs to the freeway with plans to reopen all lanes in time for the Monday commute.

The agency says right now they are working for a temporary fix and will attempt a permanent fix at a later time.

This stretch of road has been problematic due to a collapsing culvert, but the rains just made it worse.
