This Saturday, July 17, is “Clear the Shelters Day” in San Diego and Beyond

Encinitas, CA – Anyone who works or volunteers at an animal shelter will agree that their greatest wish is to see empty kennels because all of the animals have been adopted. That will be the goal this Saturday, July 17, 2019 when your Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) joins paws with NBC and Telemundo television stations and other animal shelters and rescues nationwide for the 5th annual “Clear the Shelters” day in San Diego.

Animal shelters across the country are teaming up to match homeless pets with their new, forever families. The goal is to #ClearTheShelters by finding forever homes for as many animals as possible.

RCHS Adoptions Manager Ashley Llapitan says, “We’ll get an early start for Clear the Shelters Day by opening the adoption kennels, Cattery, and Rabbitat at 8:00 AM instead of our usual opening time of 11:00 AM. We’ll accept adoption applications until 2:30. Any pets who have not been adopted by 3:00 PM will be available for adoption starting at 11:00 Sunday morning. But, of course, our goal is to Clear the Shelters. Ask about special adoption fees for this one day, nationwide, pet adoption drive.”

More than 100,000 pets were adopted during last year’s event, but millions more remained homeless. Every year, 6.5 million animals end up in shelters nationwide — and only 3.2 million are adopted, according to the ASPCA.

Since 2015, Clear the Shelters has helped 256,688 pets find forever homes. Anyone thinking about inviting a new pet into their family is encouraged to visit a local animal shelter or pet rescue organization to adopt during Clear the Shelters on Aug. 17. Hundreds of shelters across the country will waive or discount fees as part of the one-day adoption drive.
