Kurt Cobain's 'MTV Unplugged' Guitar Is Going Up For Auction

Kurt Cobain On 'MTV Unplugged'

Kurt Cobain's famed MTV Unplugged guitar is going up for auction next month, and it could be your...for seven figures.

The 1959 Martin D-18E acoustic guitar is heading to Julien's Auctions as part of its "Music Icons" auction, which takes place in Beverly Hills and online June 15-19, and is estimated to start at $1 million.

The performance is one of Nirvana's most iconic, and took place just five months before Cobain's tragic death. According to a press release, the guitar comes with the original hard-shell case that Cobain decorated with a flyer for Poison Idea’s 1990 album, Feel the Darkness, along with three baggage-claim ticket stubs and an Alaska Airlines sticker. Inside the case is a half-used pack of Martin guitar strings, three picks, and a “suede ‘stash’ bag” adorned with a small silver spoon, fork, and knife.

“This important guitar has earned its rightful place in rock & roll history as the instrument played by one of rock’s most influential musicians and icons in one of the greatest and most memorable live performances of all time,” Julien's Auctions president and CEO Darren Julien said in a statement.

Last year, the auction house sold the cardigan Cobain wore during the performance for $334,000, setting a record for most expensive sweater ever sold at auction.
