A Newport Beach police union official is blaming a so-called "TikTok takeover" for the rioting on the 4th of July that resulted in more than 400 arrests.
A Vons Pavilions store was looted, and several fights broke out on a portion of the balboa peninsula. Newport Beach officials say at least 10 fires were set, and 44 people were transported to local hospitals. There were at least a half-dozen trauma cases.
It all started after 7 p.m. when large crowds started lighting off fireworks and getting in fights around 26th street. by 8:25 an unlawful assembly was declared, and residents were told to shelter in place while hundreds of police officers worked to clear the streets. that ended up taking most of the night.
