Braille Institute San Diego: Free Low Vision Seminar And Technology Fair

Braille Institute San Diego, the premiere nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people with vision loss, will host its annual Low Vision Seminar and Technology Fair on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at their San Diego campus from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
In San Diego County alone, there are nearly 35,000 residents who are affected by vision loss, and this event and the programs offered by Braille Institute are designed to support their independence.
The seminar, now in its 17th year, will present overviews on various eye diseases, including cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and more. The event’s keynote speaker, Dr. Nikolas London, M.D., based in Poway, Calif., has more than a decade of experience in the field.
Guests will have an opportunity to meet vendors who provide technology to help people with low vision, and can take tours of the Braille Institute San Diego campus. Visitors can learn more about the free programs and services offered to help those with vision loss learn new ways to continue doing the things they love while also reducing the stigma of vision loss.
More than 200 individuals are expected to attend this free event. People who are blind or visually impaired – as well as their family and caregivers – are encouraged to attend the event to learn more about the broad range of opportunities for local residents to live well with low vision throughout the year. All classes and workshops offered by Braille Institute San Diego are free of charge.
“Our free Low Vision Seminar and Technology Fair is a great opportunity for people to learn more about vision loss, and get information about free programs that can help them live well with low vision,” said Jay Hatfield, executive director, Braille Institute San Diego. “In addition to the high quality presenters and technology vendors, we are thrilled to open our classrooms so people with low vision can drop in to meet our instructors, and learn more about how our programs and services can help them return to what they love.”
According to a recent National Health Interview Survey, 20.6 million adult Americans reported vision loss that cannot be corrected with glasses or contacts – this is just more than six percent of the U.S. population. Nearly 90 percent of Braille Institute San Diego students have some remaining vision, and it’s the organization’s mission to support independence as their students’ vision changes. Workshops and events, like the Low Vision Seminar and Technology Fair, help Braille Institute San Diego reach individuals and their loved ones who are facing vision loss.
