Famed Civil Rights activist and two time Democratic presidential candidate Jessie Jackson has died.
His family released a statement saying Jackson passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning, peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.
Jackson made numerous visits to San Diego, but perhaps one of the most memorable was a 1984 trip, when he was a Democratic presidential candidate.
Jackson was in San Diego for an international rally, marching to the U.S. Mexico border, trying to build his "Rainbow Coalition" into a powerful political force.
He told the crowd, which numbered in the thousands "Red, yellow, brown back and white we are all precious in God's sight."
As reported by the Union Tribune at the time, Jackson's speech was "interrupted frequently by applause and cheers. But the greatest applause came when he repeated a often-used line: 'Undocumented workers are not illegal aliens....we're talking about people who need our help.; "
