San Diego Unified To Eliminate Hundreds Of Jobs

San Diego Unified is moving forward with eliminating several hundred positions that will impact classified employees.

The unanimous vote during Tuesday's School Board meeting comes less than three weeks after a deal was reached with the teachers union.

Classified employees include bus drivers, teachers aides, custodians, special ed and cafeteria workers

Miguel Arellano, a paraeducator independence facilitator with San Diego Unified and a representative of San Diego Paraeducators Chapter 759 tells reporting partner 10 News "We are already spread thin, so, with more of a case load, it's going to be impossible to be able to service all the students that we need to have."

The district will cut 221 positions — 133 that are currently filled and 88 that are vacant — to save $19 million dollars and help address a projected $47 million deficit for the next fiscal year.

Preliminary layoff notices are expected to go out on March 15th, with final notices by May 15th.
