US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has announced prosecutors are prepared to challenge states that have legalized cannabis.
Recreational sales of cannabis became legal in California in 2018. But, rules on who can grow and sell marijuana are still being finalized. A rural county has banned all commercial activities and is cracking down on illegal production.
In late 2017, Sisskiyou County, California declared a state of emergency and requested state and federal help. The new law gives counties the chance to opt out of cannabis sales. Sisskiyou County chose to do so.
The county established a cannabis eradication unit in 2016. In 2017, the unit seized 27,000 illegal plants and processed cannabis worth $375 million.
In California, individuals are allowed up to 12 plants for medicinal use.
Official encounter anywhere from 99 to almost 3,000 plants on a plot.
