New Jersey animal experts have identified a giant skull found on an Ocean County beach earlier this week -- and it's not from a dinosaur, dragon or giant bird.
Officials with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection say the oversized bird-like skull belonged to a Minke whale, a species protected under the Marina Mammal Protection Act. Despite the size of their noggins, Minkes are actually the smallest member of the "great whale" family, experts say.
The whale that apparently lost its head in New Jersey was likely 35 feet long and weighed 20,000 pounds, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
