A stray dog who was monkeying around at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park managed to escape with uninjured after it wandered into the zoo's gorilla enclosure, officials say.
Zoo officials discovered the dog -- a male shepherd with no microchip -- over the weekend in a habitat that houses two gorillas, who appeared to be uninterested in their canine visitor, according to San Diego Zoo rep Nina Thompson. Nevertheless, the gorillas were immediately removed from the enclosure as "part of the regular safety procedures at the park," Thompson says.
The dog has been named "Mighty Joe Young" by Humane Society workers, who leashed and removed it from the habitat, Thompson says. It's now up for adoption at the Humane Society's Escondido Campus, she adds.
